New Claim

A new claim is filed when a veteran is requesting VA disability benefits for a condition that has not previously been submitted or considered by the VA. This includes any injuries, illnesses, or mental health conditions believed to be connected to military service. Supporting evidence—like service records, medical reports, and lay statements—helps establish the initial service connection.

What to Include:

• Medical diagnosis of the condition
• Service records or incident reports (proving when/how it began)
• Lay statements (self or buddy statements describing the onset)
• Any in-service treatment documentation (if applicable)
• Nexus letter or medical opinion linking the condition to service
• VA Form 21-526EZ (Application for Disability Compensation)
